Ascot Ladies Day Fundraiser

It wouldn’t be June without Ascot and it wouldn’t be Ascot without the Clubs annual Ascot Ladies Day fundraiser organised by Rotarian Ken Whalley and his wife Jan.

Over 350 guests treated themselves to a flutter on the horses whilst being entertained by the Bill Bailey Jazz Band and enjoying a three-course meal before dancing on into the night.

Ken, the owner of Kenneth Clive Menswear and Hire in Pattingham, has organised the charity event at Wolverhampton Rugby Club for the past 12 years raising thousands to help local good causes such as Compton Hospice, Wolverhampton MS Therapy Centre and youth clubs in the area.

Despite competing with an England v Wales fixture in the Euros the event raised over £2,300 in support of good causes.

Doing Good at Christmas

Christmas is a busy time for Rotary Clubs everywhere and Tettenhall is no exception as we once again took to the streets of Wolverhampton to support Santa Claus. For many of our members the opportunity to take a little Christmas magic to children in parts of the City who otherwise would be unlikely to have the opportunity to see Santa Claus really does make this one of the best times of the year.

Since the start of the Festive Season with the switch on of the Christmas Lights on Tettenhall Upper Green members of the Club have been busy working with the ladies of the Tettenhall Inner Wheel Club and the young men and women of the Army Cadet Corps accompanying Santa around Wolverhampton as well as raising money in support local good causes.

Despite the difficult economic conditions, the generosity of the people of Wolverhampton has not diminished with over £6,500 raised in aid of Compton Hospice and other Rotary Charities.

The Club’s thanks go to Terminus Contract Hire in Wolverhampton, Asda in Wolverhampton, Sainsburys of Perton and the Midcounties Co-operative at Codsall for their support and to sleigh co-ordinator Chris Bowyer and his team for all of their hard work.

Charity Valuation Day

If you loved the Antiques Roadshow when it visited Wightwick
Manor in Wolverhampton then it’s time to dig out all of those treasures you’ve
got hiding around the house because we’ve teamed up with local auctioneers Fellows & Sons for a special valuation day at the Royal School Wolverhampton on the
29th September between 11 and 3.

Established in 1876, Fellows & Sons Ltd is one of the
United Kingdom’s oldest and most respected firms of Auctioneers and Valuers and
their specialists will be on hand on the day to provide you with a valuation of
your items.

All we’re asking is that you donate at least £1 for each
item that you have valued in order to help us raise as much money as possible
for Help for Heroes and Compton Hospice – and who knows you may find that you have
your very own Turner hiding in a drawer.

50 or Over? Then Help to Save a Life or Five

Polio has declined rapidly since 1985 when Rotary launched its PolioPlus project with the aim of ridding the world of Polio.  Back then polio was endemic in 125 countries with over 350,000 cases per year but now thanks to the work of Rotary volunteers and their supporters there are only 3 polio endemic countries with fewer than 230 cases reported in 2012.

We’re nearly there but the fight to end this crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease isn’t over yet. It costs just 40p to vaccinate a child against polio for life. If we don’t finish the fight right now, more than 10 million children under the age of five could be paralysed in the next 40 years.

If you are aged 50 or over then there’s a simple way that you can help Rotary to raise money to make sure that every child has access to the polio vaccine. Saga Holidays have promised to support Rotary’s PolioPlus fundraising by donating £2 for each of its questionnaires completed by Rotarians and others, aged 50 or over.

Remember it costs just 40p to vaccinate a child, so by completing Saga Holidays questionnaire you can help protect five children for life against polio without it costing you a penny.

This Club Believes in Santa

Not only do we believe in Santa but together with members of Tettenhall Inner Wheel Club our Club members and their families have been busy throughout December working with Santa and Rudolph as his sleigh has visited children throughout Wolverhampton. For many Club members our visits with Santa are one of the most rewarding things that we do as it helps to brings a bit of Christmas magic to children in parts of the City who otherwise might miss out on the chance to see Santa Claus.

We want to thank everyone who braved the often wet weather to give Santa such a wonderful welcome and who in the process helped us to raise over £6,000 which we’ll make sure goes to help local good causes.

Organising the sleigh is a mammoth task so its hats off to sleigh co-ordinator Chris Bowyer and his Committee who worked tirelessly in order to make it a success. The Club’s thanks also go to Terminus Contract Hire in Wolverhampton, to Sainsburys of  Perton, the Midcounties Co-operative at Codsall and to Asda in Wolverhampton for their support.
