Rotary: Making a Difference

It was great to spend this evening in the company of our District Governor Carol Reilly who was making her official visit to the Club.

During their year of office Rotary District Governors make an official visit to each of the Clubs in their area to share news of developments within Rotary and to present the theme of the Rotary International President – this year Australian Rotarian Ian H S Riseley.

This years theme is ‘Rotary:Making a Difference’ recognising the many ways in which thousands of Rotarians around the world are working together to do good and challenging Clubs to sustain that work into the future.

We’re looking forward to working with Carol and her team in the coming year to continue Making a Difference

In memory of David Cave

We are saddened to announce the death of founder member David Cave on Thursday 23rd March 2017 at the age of 77. Last year he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease but he carried on working and attending Rotary until last Christmas. The courage with which he faced this terrible disease was an inspiration to us all. His funeral was held on Thursday 13 April followed by a memorial service at St. Chads church Pattingham, attended by 270 friends, family, Rotarians and members of Inner Wheel.

He was an industrial and commercial photographer specialising in industrial and architectural photography including documenting the glass industry in Brierley Hill. He travelled the world for companies such as British steel/Corus/Tata, Hotpoint, Cannon and Creda. His photographs recording life in the West Midlands frequently featured in the Express and Star and other local and national publications. He was the official photographer for the visit of Princess Diana to Royal Brierley Crystal works.

David’s photographs at virtually every important event in the History of Tettenhall Rotary Club and for District 1210 are a tangible, lasting testament to the enormous contribution he made to the life of Rotary ever since he joined as a founder member in 1981.  Rarely in the limelight himself, he was always on hand to capture the moment for those who were. For many years he photographed Wolverhampton Youth Orchestra for its annual pre tour concert brochure and numerous GSE teams and other District 1210 events. His commitment to the Rotary Foundation was significant. In 2001 he was so moved by a presentation about the charity Sense International which helps children in India who are both blind and deaf that he undertook a Himalayan trek and raised over £4600. He was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship in 2001 and Sapphire award in 2013.
His kindness, compassion, generosity, loyalty, sense of humour, sound judgement, steadfast morality and strong sense of right and wrong were very special. His life epitomised the Rotary 4 way test and its motto ‘service above self’. Add to those the courage with which he faced the last year of his life, we have lost an exceptional Rotarian.  Our thoughts and prayers are with wife, Lynne, their daughters Elizabeth and Kathryn, brother Malcolm and sister Anne.

Rachael’s Day

Members of the Club were out this weekend supporting local charity POWER PLEAS at the annual ‘Rachael’s Day’ Molineux bucket collection.

Keith Berry of Power Pleas

This was the Clubs 23rd pre-match collection at Molineux and during that time the collections – originally the brainchild of Rachael Heyhoe-Flint – have raised over £50,000 in support of local good causes.

Saturdays collection saw generous Wolverhampton Wanderers FC fans donate £2,372.00 to help purchase wheelchairs and mobility aids for  local youngsters with mobility disorders.

It’s Santa Sleigh Time

It’s coming up to Christmas and for lots of voluntary Clubs around the country that means that they are busy working with Santa Claus bringing the joy of Christmas to the boys and girls in their area and raising money to support local good causes through the coming year.

You can find details of where you can meet the Rotary Club of Tettenhall Santa on our Facebook Events page and we have details of both our own and other local Club sleigh dates on our facebook site for Wolverhampton Santa Claus

In Memory – Remembrance Day 2016

President John and ex-serviceman Club member Les Bouts joined Honorary Club members the Mayor and Mayoress of Wolverhampton together with representatives of the City’s many service organisations on Sunday to lay wreaths in memory of the fallen at the Wolverhampton Cenotaph as part of the City’s Observance of Remembrance to mark the sacrifice of those who in the words of the Rotary motto truly put ‘Service Above Self’.

There was an excellent turnout for the Observance with the Band of the West Midlands Fire Service leading a 400-strong parade including detachments from ex-Service, Regular, Reserve, Cadet Units and representatives of other local uniformed organisations from Wulfruna Street to St Peter’s Square, where a Drumhead Service – the traditional form for a religious service attended by troops in the field – took place, followed by a second service in St Peter’s Collegiate Church.

Celebrating 400 years of Shakespeare

We’re proud to support the pupils of Tettenhall Wood School as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival.

The Festival harnesses the power of Shakespeare to amuse and terrify, move and inspire in order to help change the lives of the students taking part by building confidence, teamwork, literacy and ambition.

The pupils will be performing at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre this Thursday and with some tickets still available you can share the experience yourself by contacting the Box Office on 01902 429 212 or by booking online.

Welcome to Rob Roalfe

We’ve worked on projects with the staff and pupils of Penn Fields School for many years so it’s with especial pleasure that we welcome the schools deputy head teacher Robert Roalfe as our newest Club member.
A keen motorcyclist Robert is certified a Long Distance Riders and his rides have raised thousands to support the work of the air ambulances.
Robert was welcomed to the Club by President John Margetts and President Elect Roger Webb.

District Governor John Sayer

As part of their duties Rotary District Governors are expected to visit every Club in their area during their year in office. Tonight we had the honour of being the first Club in the District to receive the official visit of District Governor John Sayer.

John, who has been involved in the Rotary movement for over 20 years, is looking forward to a year in office which comes at a time when our own charity The Rotary Foundation celebrates its 100th anniversary. Over those 100 years our Foundation has channelled more than one billion dollars to help transform lives around the world.

In 1985 Rotary’s Polio Plus campaign was launched with the aim of eradicating polio from the face of the earth and in this centenary year of the Rotary Foundation there is the very real possibility that this may be the year that we see the world’s last case of polio. John – and the ever present End Polio Now teddy – will be promoting the work of the Rotary Foundation throughout his year in office.
