We hope that you are enjoying the thousands of purple crocuses which we’ve planted on Upper Green and around the City to raise awareness and symbolize Rotary’s fight against polio.

Rotary has been at the forefront of the global effort to eradicate polio for over 35 years. When our project started there were over 1,000 cases every day paralysing and even killing children – but thanks to mass immunisation campaigns we are now on the verge of wiping this disease out with only 99 cases recorded in the whole of last year.
π· Why Purple?:
The purple crocus represents the colour of the dye used to mark the fingers of children who have been immunized against polio. This purple mark signifies that a child has received the vaccine and helps prevent duplication of vaccinations during mass immunization campaigns. The vibrant purple blooms are a poignant reminder of the countless lives saved and the ongoing battle to ensure every child is protected from polio.
π Why It Matters:
Polio is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5.
Thanks to the efforts of Rotary and its partners, polio cases have been reduced by 99.9% since 1988.
Continued vaccination and awareness are crucial to prevent the resurgence of polio and protect future generations.
