World Polio Day

Today is World Polio Day. Polio is a serious viral infection with no cure that causes temporary or permanent paralysis, which can be life threatening.

Polio invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. It can strike at any age but affects mainly children under 5. Before a vaccine was introduced in the 1950s epidemics would result in up to 7760 cases of paralytic polio in the UK each year with up to 750 deaths.

Rotary Clubs around the world have been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years and over that time we’ve managed to reduce polio cases by 99.9%. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments and the Gates Foundation to contribute billions more to the effort.

Today polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan and with your help  a polio-free world is possible. Join with Rotary this World Polio Day to End Polio Now: endpol.io/wpd

It’s time to say Thank You

Christmas is a time to remember and to give thanks. As part of Tettenhall Remembers we come together to remember on our virtual Tree of Light those we love, those we have lost and those who we thank for helping us – NHS workers, neighbours, local trades people and the friends who have brought our community closer together.

In previous years the donations made by supporters of Tettenhall Remembers have helped to support the continuing work of Compton Care and Acorns Children’s Hospice.

Your donations this year will help us to continue to support the work of smaller local charities and other good causes many of who have been severely impacted by the Covid 19 pandemic.

We’re asking you to take a moment to say thank you and to help to support the work of local good causes throughout the year by taking part in Tettenhall Remembers 2020 – visit www.give.net/TettenhallRemembers2020 to donate.

A Message from Santa

 Dear Children and Parents

Usually I meet many of you before Christmas when members of Tettenhall Rotary Club take me to supermarkets, lights switch on events and around the houses in Claregate, Fordhouses, Bushbury, Low Hill, Old Fallings and the Scotlands. Unfortunately, this year, because of the risk of illness, we are not allowed to do it.

Tettenhall Rotary Club Sleigh has been carrying me around for 17 years and when I have met children I have normally asked them what they would like for Christmas. But as I can’t do that this year, children must make sure that they tell Mummy or Daddy to let me know and I will do my best.

In the past, many children have told me that all they want for Christmas is for their family to be happy, people to be nice and a cure be found for those who are poorly. I know that the doctors and nurses are working really hard at the moment to help those who are suffering.

So don’t forget, children, be good and ask a parent to let me know what you would like. At the same time please ask them to make a donation to Tettenhall Rotary Club at www.give.net/WolvesSanta so that they can help local charities and good causes.

REMEMBER, WHEN YOU ARE ALL FAST ASLEEP ON CHRISTMAS NIGHT, I WILL VISIT YOUR HOME. YOU WILL NOT SEE ME BUT I WILL SEE YOU.

Happy Christmas to you all

Santa

World Polio Day

Today is #WorldPolioDay!

Rotary Clubs around the word have been working together since 1985 to eradicate this paralysing disease from the face of the earth.

As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has helped to reduce polio cases by more than 99.9 percent.

Amid all of the bad news this year it was easy to miss the great news that the initiative has now eradicated polio from Africa and that this disease which as recently as the late 1980s was endemic in 125 countries, claiming 350,000 children per year, has now been run to ground so that it remains in just two remaining places, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

You can help us finish the job by donating today – the Gates Foundation will match your donations 2-to-1, meaning your £1 becomes £3! Help us end polio at bit.ly/donateEPN
