Wolverhampton’s The Way Youth Zone

The National Lottery Awards are an annual search to find the UK’s favourite Lottery funded projects. Lottery players raise £36 million each week for projects all across the UK and the Awards highlight how that funding has changed the UK for the better.

One of the local recipients of National Lottery funding has been The Way Youth Zone – a great venue in the centre of the City which gives the young people of Wolverhampton the opportunity to access a massive range of activities including sports, fitness, dance, arts, music, media, enterprise and wellbeing.

The venue gives its users access to a high spec music room, a 3G pitch, enterprise media suite, climbing wall, multi use 4 court sports hall, cafe, dance studio, gym, cooking area, general recreation area and much more..

We’ve been fortunate to be the guests of the The Way and to see first hand the wonderful facilities and the difference which the commitment of its many volunteers is making to the lives of the young people using the facility and benefiting the City as whole.

The Way is one of this years finalists in the National Lottery Youth Awards and with your vote they’ll be in a position to attend the awards event and to have their work in the City highlighted on BBC One. As one of the winners they’ll also receive an additional £3,000 of Lottery funding.

It only takes a minute to vote so please follow the link now and show your support for their wonderful work.

Return of the Past President

Its good to have Past President Sammy Chung back with us.

Sammy was our President in 2013-14 but family commitments overseas have kept him away for some time so tonight was the first opportunity that we have had to thank him for his service to the Club.

President Rob had the pleasure of presenting Sammy with his Past Presidents medal and a Commemorative Engraved Tankard.

Be a Gift to the World

Each new President of Rotary International sets a theme for his year in office and our new President, K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran’s theme is ‘Be a Gift to the World’.

Ravi asks us all to give thought to how we want to spend our time on this earth and reminds us that we won’t be remembered for the efforts that we put into making our own lives richer or our own status higher and that in the end, our worth will be measured not by how much we acquired, but by how much we gave away.

Rotary helps us find a path to living richer, more meaningful lives, by encouraging us to focus our attention on the things that matter — and helping each of us find our own way to be a gift to the world.

Through Rotary, we can  make a genuine difference in the lives of others and in our world.

Through Rotary, we can leave behind something real and lasting.

If you’d like to give something back and to start making a difference in your local community and in the world then why not take a look at joining Rotary yourself.

Carrying the Torch for Rotary

The 43rd day of the Olympic Torch tour of the UK saw it visit Wolverhampton today. Many of the torch bearers are being recognised for the volunteer work which they undertake in their communities. The flame was carried through Wolverhampton by Jamie Ward a young athlete who runs for the Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletic Club. Jamie encourages others to participate in sports and also raises funds for the athletics club and his local youth football team.

Today also sees the last day of the Rotary year and for President John the end of his Presidential year. John’s Club theme for the year was ‘Fun with a Purpose’ and he set out to build upon the already strong fellowship within the Club to enable us to significantly increase the support which we provide to our local community and in particular to support the new Rotary and Volunteer Suite at Compton Hospice. The hard work which John and his team have put in has certainly paid off with this year seeing the Club raise the second highest amount of charity funds in its history as well as having a great time in the process. The opportunity to hold the Torch as it passed through Wolverhampton was a great way for John to mark the end of such a successful year.

Happy Valley Rotary Club Visit

As a Rotarian you are always a welcome guest at the meetings of any of the 34,000 Rotary Clubs around the world – its an opportunity to see how Rotary operates in other areas and to make new friends and contacts.

Club Junior Vice President Sammy Chung, a senior lecturer at Wolverhampton University and Honorary Professor at Shenzhen University, often visits Hong Kong and other parts of China. During a recent visit to Hong Kong he had the opportunity of attending a meeting of the Happy Valley Rotary Club.

The Club meets every Monday at the Hong Kong Bankers Club and counts amongst its members barristers, accountants, University lecturers as well as a legal adviser to LegCo – the Hong Kong legislative council. Whilst at the meeting Sammy heard from Jeremiah Chan about the introduction of the new senior secondary curriculum in Hong Kong and from Chan Tsz Wa and Cheng Chun Tou two Interact members who explained the voluntary work which their Club was undertaking in the local community.

Sammy tonight presented President John with the Happy Valley Club banner which President Fenn had sent back to our Club with him.

Its World Rotary Day

Today is Rotary’s birthday – 107 years since the formation of our first Club in Chicago by Paul Harris.

To mark the event and to celebrate the progress which the 1.2 million members of Rotary are making in the battle to eradicate polio Rotary Clubs around the world will today light up landmark buildings with the simple message END POLIO NOW.

Rotary Club of Macau Visit

Many members of the Tettenhall Club take the opportunity to visit other clubs when travelling on business or pleasure. Club member Sammy Chung often travels to China and during his most recent visit he took the opportunity of attending a meeting of the Rotary Club of Macau where he had the pleasure of meeting the Macau Club President Keith Pharis.

Founded in 1947 the Macau club has been the meeting place for a wide cross section of Macau society, encompassing people of various professions and nationalities. They are fortunate to meet each week in Venetian Casino Hotel (in Sammy’s opinion one of the best Casino Hotels in Macau) and count amongst their members the Hotel’s senior manager Guy Lesquoy.

The meeting heard from Mr. Pui Fai IP on the work which the Club was carrying out assisting schools in a rural area of Guangxi Province, China. Working with their partners in the Rotary Clubs of Kowloon North, Taipei North, and Ama in Nagoya, together with the Macau Catholic Social Services, the members of the Macau club have helped to build and equip six primary schools and a middle school in remote mountain villages in Du’An, Guangxi Province.
